The Talent Equation

Do you have a formula for identifying talent?

Most of us 'get a feeling' when it comes to identifying talent, but that's not always reliable when working with today's young athletes.

In this podcast episode of Coaches You Should Know I interview Coach Stuart Armstrong, currently the Player Pathway Manager for the Rugby Football Union.

In this episode we discuss the following:
  • What's your current role in the RFU?
  • How did you first become a coach?
  • When was a time you failed big and how did you get past it?
  • What has been one or two of your highlights of your coaching career?
  • For the married coaches out there what do you mean by 'husband 2.0'?
  • What are some practical strategies for talent development of young athletes?
  • How can coaches recognize talent?
  • What do you mean by the 'talent equation'?
  • How can coaches help improve the intangible qualities of their athletes?
  • What would I see if I got to watch you coach a practice?
  • How do you deal with an athlete who is having a bad day?
  • Plus More!
Coach Armstrong is currently the Player Pathway Manager for the Rugby Football Union currently working there as Player Pathways Manager focusing enhancing coaching opportunities for 5000 young rugby players between the ages of 13 and 16 as well as establishing strategies to ensure that they are retained in the game.

He also is a National Age Group Talent Development Coach at England Hockey working with the top U16 and U18 players in the country but biggest coaching challenge involves the U8s I coach on a Sunday morning!

Formerly he has served as the Lead Officer for Talent at Sports Coach UK as well as having launched the groundbreaking golf programme aimed at children aged 5 to 11 called Tri-Golf which has gone on to become a global movement and has now provided over 1,000,000 children with their first experiences of golf.

My goal is to be able to show up in the lives of coaches around the world every week (if not daily)! But in order to do that I need your help.

The way that iTunes determines which podcast shows get featured is by how many people download the podcast, leave reviews (key!), and also subscribe.

These podcasts are free and it usually takes me two days to prepare, record, edit, and produce each show but with your help I know I can help many others just like you!

I would be grateful if you took literally less than 60 seconds and left an honest review of the show. Click Here to Open iTunes
