In each episode I will be reviewing a chapter from the book discussing various aspects and tools of mental performance and how you can get your athletes to show up when it counts the most.

To find out more about the ‘Play Your Best’ book and facilitator course CLICK HERE

Below are a few highlights from this episode:

Overview of ‘Play Your Best’

6 Main Reasons why I wrote the book and created the system

athlete’s don’t always make good decisions

athlete’s struggle to show up when it counts the most

athlete’s have poor communication & conversational skills

athlete’s struggle with mental toughness & self-confidence

athlete’s have not participated in a formal mental performance program

athlete’s need to learn what it means to be coachable and a great team player

Exactly how I use it with my own athletes

Every athlete that I work with (including high school, college, and pro athletes) gets a copy when we first start working together. This helps me to address the mental part of their game as well as ensuring that we will be on the same page when it comes to me being able to help them improve all aspects of their performance.

6 practical applications and suggestions for how you can best implement ‘Play Your Best’ into your program

as part of an athlete ‘welcome package’ for new athletes in your program

create a small group class that meets once per week covering a chapter each week

as part of your school’s student athlete curriculum for a fall/winter/spring sports season

offer the book as a bonus for early registration for your summer camps

use it as a give away during a talk to local sports clubs/teams

implement the book into weekly team meetings

Plus more!

The Coach Your Best Podcast now has over 5,000 unique downloads and growing strong! However, I am no where near close to where I am hoping to be in an effort to bring value and education to coaches like you.

In fact, I am more excited than ever before about the next few months and the episodes that will be posted but I need your help.

If everyone one who reads this post and who listens to the podcast would be willing to rate and hopefully review the Coach Your Best Podcast by following the guidelines below, the show would easily rise to the Top 10 Podcasts in the Fitness & Nutrition Category and have a chance at being a featured podcast on Itunes in the category.

So…here is how you can help out! (Especially if you feel like you get value from listening to each episode)

1) Go to the iTunes Page (LINK HERE) and Subscribe to the podcast from iTunes.

2) Click on the number of stars for the rating you think I deserve.

3) Write a sentence or two review of the podcast.

Here is a screenshot below that shows exactly where you would do these three things:

The ultimate goal is to bring an awareness to as many coaches, trainers, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and others to the Coach Your Best message and what it really takes to help others be their best!

In part one of this new series titled ‘Understanding the ADHD Brain and Sports Performance’ I have a great discussion with nationally recognized Dr. Ari Tuckman. Here is just some of what we discussed:

What is ADHD? Should it really be called Attention Deficit Disorder?

Does ADHD actually hinder or help athletic performance?

What are a few signs for coaches to look for in identifying an athlete who may possibly have ADHD?

Great athletes make great decisions. What are Executive Functions and what do they have to do with decision making? What are the social implications they can have within a team setting?

I often challenge my athletes to build better brakes when it comes to effective decision making. You use the term ‘Response Inhibition’ in your workbook ‘Understand Your Brain Get More Done’. Why is this so important for coaches and athletes with ADHD and what are a few practical strategies to improve it?

You mention in the beginning of the chapter the three primary components of Galtan’s components to achieving excellence (innate capacity, zeal, the power to work hard), but follow that these are not enough…what other factors are important in achieving athletic excellence? (discuss the role of environment)

You also mention the famous study of ’10,000 hours of training to become an expert’. What are your thoughts about the application of this study to achieving athletic excellence?

How can coaches better maximize available practice time?

What role does ’Culture’ play in talent development?

What do you mean by the ‘Relative Age Effect’?

Ch. 5

What are some of the challenges that exist for talent identification and development?

There has been a lot of focus on the importance of ‘deliberate practice’, but how important is ‘deliberate play’?

Ch. 6

What do you mean by ‘individual-environment synergies shape talent development’?

What do you mean by the term ‘meta-stability’?

Define what you mean by ‘talent development is a non-linear process’
