As summer is only a few weeks away and various camps are about to start, I just had to post this email from a parent regarding their child. It is this mindset that Mark Hyman is exactly referring to in his book 'Until It Hurts'. Check it out below:
Hi J,
Just left a voicemail. XXXXX and XXX would like to get started on an intensive program running until Fall Season.
I'll let XXXX, his dad add his comments to this, but what I'd like to see for XXXX is that he can gain 20 lbs this summer. He (and XXXX) are at the right "puberty" stage to do this. Unless you think otherwise, XXXXX can gain the vast majority of this muscle around the hips, gluts, upper thighs and calves. Those areas are underdeveloped and underutilized and I think he would see (Goal) the most speed improvement, balance (core),stability and kicking strength through development in those areas. I think that requires exercising a range of motion much lower than in his normal running which would include exercises like jumping, squat thrusts, cycle, lower abs and back exercises in addition to improvement of form and diet.
I think I have the ability to train his upper body so I'd like the most help with his lower strength.
I'd like to see some initial measurements (e.g., height, weight, speed, vertical, kicking power..) in order to compare later this summer.
Let us know what times might work for you and what the cost would be.
Can you believe this email? I have heard of many crazy stories in my life about parent's but this one about gaining 20lbs of muscle might top them all! We need to ask ourselves as professionals what can we do to better educate parent's on the realistic expectations of training their child?
I would love to hear any specific stories that you may have as well!
