Okay this is for all performance coaches who work with high school athletes. In the past week alone two of my former female athletes that I have worked with (unfortunately not on a consistent basis) have now torn their ACL's!
They both play soccer but one just finished up her basketball season ten days ago leading into the start of the girl's high school soccer season this past week. Could this injury have been completely avoided? I think so...
From day one I told her that she needed to continue strength training throughout her season. While she wanted to she simply could not due to the fact that the head coach literally ran the team into the ground!
The entire team basically had no legs the last third of their season and all because the coach chose to run the players into the ground. C'mon there is no need for a three hour practice of mostly running the morning after every Friday night game.
Okay enough ranting, so here is my challenge to you because I am making myself more angry at the situation and extremely sad for these two young ladies as I write this!!!!!
EDUCATE the coaches of the players that you work with about FATIGUE!!!
PLEASE make sure that they clearly understand a player is only as
good as their body's ability to recover!!
If you can get the coaches that you work with to truly understand this simple principle, you will see the rate of non-contact injuries dramatically decrease
That's all for now... stay tuned for the review of my presentation at the Williams Strength Clinic in South Carolina that I did this past Friday night
